You can always reference external geometry from various geometry formats using the File SOP, but if you're interested in referencing entire node networks (eg. rigs or setups), look at HDA's (which get stored in files called OTLs). These are encapsulated, referenced node networks which can embed scripts, geometry, images, anything really. HDAs can include other HDAs too.
