ventralstreams
Hello everyone. I have absolutely no idea how to install HOT so I decided to create my own ocean surface. I followed the sidefx CHOPS example but now I need to create sharpness on the waves edges to get a more realistic look. I suspect using VEX should be the best way but cannot figure out how to do it (newbie). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance
Macha
It's an old post but I attempt an answer. Use a vopnet and create your waves in there. The trick is to use the right wave generating function. Google for Gerstner waves, they give nice sharp edges. You can then manipulate the amplitude and phase with a raysop and the waves will diffract around objects. It works OK for simple setups. sam.h
Here is an example of making a mesh choppy ... it sets the normal to (undeformed normal) - (deformed normal) then goes through a peak SOP choppy.hip Edited September 1, 2009 by sam.h
Ratman
You know the HOT has a Readme file that's pretty basic to follow? All you gotta do is copy a few files into a folder, or if the folders aren't there you just have to create them. Just a thought.
Macha
You know the HOT has a Readme file that's pretty basic to follow? I'm interested in that as well. I downloaded it from here but never managed to get it working. http://code.google.com/p/houdini-ocean-toolkit/downloads/list I always get a list of error messages when I load the example files and I can't see the README file. Macha
Thanks eloop. The trick was setting environment variables.

ventralstreams
Hi guys. Thank you for helping out. On the HOT matter I also have tried to install it but ended up getting a bunch of errors. The info on the HOT site makes no sense to me. It reads: Linux and OSX Add the new directory to the HOUDINI_PATH in your .bashrc or .cshrc according to which shell you use. So if you unzipped hotbin_linux_H10.0.374.zip into the directory /home/huser/stuff/hotbin_linux_H10.0.374 you would do the following export HOUDINI_PATH="/home/huser/stuff/hotbin_linux_H10.0.374;&" I 'm on OSX. If anyone can help out I'd be grateful. I will check out the VOP solution when I find the time. Thanx again.
