Rendering consistent volume opacity

I have a relatively long, thin, uniform volume I'm rendering. Viewed head-on, the depth of the volume makes it very opaque, whilst at other angles it appears shallower and therefore more transparent. This is all correct, and to be expected. However, I'd like the volume to appear to have the same resulting opacity regardless of which angle it is viewed from. May sound a little strange, but it's hat I'd like to achieve. I've tried varying the density of the volume depending upon the viewing angle, but I just can't get my head around the VEX enough to get it to work. Any thoughts?
