Starting point for a snow shader

I'm trying to achieve a snow effect with some metaballs (converted to polygons) that are on a surface. What would be a good start for the shader? Trying to achieve that slightly fluffy but also quite firm appearance of snow that has settled on the surface several hours after it has fallen.
