Houdini particle size in Maya

Recommended Posts

I'm exporting some particles from Houdini via alembic (importing via exocortex crate), but how do I control the size of the particles when rendered (rendering in Arnold)? I tried setting pscale and radiusPP (on points and verts) in Houdini but nothing seems to work. And thinking about it I guess I would need to get opacity per particle exported too.. Or I could re-map these based on age in Maya.. Has anyone done this before?

I don't think crate import any attribute at all,i just it a wall with this ,its amazing but looks like there is no way to export using alembic, the default importer in maya can import some attributes but its a joke it cant import particles, and looks like most of the studios are using custom solutions.

So we are in 2015, and still we cant get particles going from A to B without custom solutions or the freaking Houdini engine just for particles.

First, remember that maya scale is 100 times bigger than houdini scale, so whatever you are going to export you have to scale by 100. After that you have to multiply your "pscale" attribute by 100 too because it doesn't scale by default as "v" would.

Then you would have to map it to the variable you need in maya, have you tried using "scalePP" instead of "radiousPP"?. Exporting Alembic should do just fine.

Its 2020, did someone figure out how to render out pscale with alembic?

it's 2020, but what does it have to do with Houdini? you may have better luck getting answer on Maya or Arnlod forums

first of all don't try to import .abc to Maya directly, last time I checked Maya couldn't read particles from .abc without hacks

rendering .abc directly using Arnold Alembic procedural should work though, however you may need to figure out what attribute name Arnold uses for particle radius, whether it is pscale, ar_radius or something else

or use Arnold USD Procedural and export .usd form Houdini, probably with primvar called widths (which represents particle diameter)
