First of all, there is REALLY BAD IDEA is to combine flat surfaces by cookie.

ohhh .... I do not know that, thanks a lot for your explanation, it is really helped.

Thats why I prefer to use extrudeSOP. Just merge those two shapes and plug them to the first input of extrude.

To go one step further, I prefer to lay the geometry out in this fashion, to be sure that any bevelling operations that I choose to perform later will work properly.

I did not get that, could you do a quick example to make it clear for me.

Just use a Polysplit SOP or a Divide SOP (using the bricker polygons options) to add the vertical division before the cookie operation.
