Solitude
I got a feeling Solitude will feel different once he properly runs a sim (looks over at Solitude) :-| ....MAYBE... ...I'm having a really hard time getting the grid based fluid in realflow to look anything like the Houdini sim... though it gives me twice+ as many particles with twice as many frames in like 1/10 of the time. I'll have to play with the particle sims too, which I'm sure will be a lot closer in terms of look, but still be faster. I would hope realflow would be faster though... it's dedicated to just fluids. I just hope houdini can come closer in terms of speed once I 'properly run a sim' I was running straight to mplay with vops coloring the particles + meshing on... so of course it'll slow it down a good bit.... we'll see what happens when I do it 'right'. P.S. Thx Wolf_Cub_One! Edited August 9, 2010 by Solitude
Solitude
Ok: Quick update -- running via hbatch -- and holy crap it's a lot faster (I take back all the bad things I said, except about Ratmann -- that's all true!)... not meshing this time around, just saving particles to disk... but I was able to crank the particle count up a bit (another 150k I think), and I'm at 215 frames (prev. ended at 240) in just over 2 hours. Gonna have to see what else I can do with hbatch and here we are: << a little over 4 hours -- hbatch rocks Edited August 10, 2010 by Solitude
zglynn
Wow your latest flip test looks really awesome. This is a noob question, but what are you doing to make those nice waves? -Zach

zglynn
Sweet. That makes me happy that you got such awesome results from something so simple. BTW your 2012 stuff blew me away!

Thx man... keep in mind 2102 was a huge team effort... bunch of other people worked on the very same shots I wish I could've gotten some of my wip / render passes... maybe next time! My scene had 500,000 particles and just simming the particles to disk took just under 3 hours for 240 frames. I didn't use HBatch, just straight ROP output driver. Houdini 11 FLIP solver does make particle fluids more practical to use. Ian, thanks for posting your times so I have something to compare with. cheers

I'm pretty sure gui-houdini would be faster for me, IF i had more ram... I'm very limited at home (4 gigs... ewww) and on my work computer H11 isn't working very well quite yet... need to try new graphics drivers, and check permissions, etc. (can't even get mplay to open from within Houdini) Not to mention what little spare time I have at work to play with Hou. anyway. Hey Ian, Hope it's ok that I post again in your thread. I wasn't going to post this since I messed up and forgot to continue the splashing of the wave when I tweaked my scene for 500,000 particles. I think that Realflow scene is doable in Houdini. I wished I had the time to try it but work comes first. cheers flip_test_low.mov

Good idea... gonna steal that. oh, and please DO post in this thread! There's no reason not to. I don't mind at all -- it's nice to have it all in one place anyway... I can edit the first post to contain links to all the newer stuff too (including yours!). Good work! And yes, I think that sim is very doable in Houdini (until we get into really crazy particle counts, and Realflow is probably still a lot faster) -- need to try and iron out a similar workflow with splash / mist / foam soon. wolf_cub_one
Ian, Thanks. I wished I had the time to do all the stuff that you've already implemented and are planning to implement in the future. I'm going to be busy pretty soon so this may be my last WIP post for awhile. Good luck on continuing your fluid tests. cheers

I have to squeeze in time after work, and after the family is asleep P.S. - good luck on whatever you're getting busy with! I'll try to squeeze some time in wherever I can. Just need to see how my new work schedule will go. wuss signing off
