How to replace some text in the editor, effectively?

Hello, maybe some of you Linux guys can shad a light on the advantage of copying by selecting. I would get used to it, when there wouldn't be the point, where I want to replace a phrase with the one I copied. How you do that?

err... the way I tend to go about it is just put the cursor in front of the text, paste it (mmb) (now the cursor is behind whatever I pasted) and press CTRL+SHIFT+rigth arrow and delete it. or SHIFT+END if it's an entire line.
