static
I don't work in Houdini on Windows on a daily basis, but whenever I try, I'm actually surprised how nice and stable it works. It H10 some things like viewport render region were usable only on Windows. This is definitely not a dream environment for Houdini, but nevertheless I think SESI did a great job in that department and I'm surprised about these complaining. I'm actually wondering how many paid customers working on Windows see any issues with Houdini's win port... I don't like the fact that houdini forces you to use its own implementation of python (at least in H11) in windows. The fact that houdini's python is a 64-bit build creates problems when trying to use them with certain 3rd party packages (namely PyQt). Setting up a dev environment is more painful as well. To me, Houdini feels like it just "fits" better with linux. It's easier for me use the software and OS in tandem. However, this is the case for most 3d apps. As far as stability goes, in earlier versions (on windows) the ui would occasionally crash on vista. On Windows 7 it has performed quite well. I can't speak for professional use since I use Fedora at work. At home, I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.
