How to pick up and hold things

I got the problem aobut animating a character to pick up a coffee cup and hold it in his hand.

What is the way to solve this problem? Changing parenting seems not possible to do in Houdini( i am not sure, but i cannot find a way in parenting).

Only change this cup's visibility? But, if the character, in animation, picks up many things in sequence. e.g. he picks up a book, then puts it down and picks up a pen so on, There will be many things invisible in his hand, that is not very good.

Please help!!

Blend(obj node) does that, connect your two parent objects to Blend node and child object after Blend and animate wieghts parameter of Blend node to switch its parent.

Use the Dynamic Parent tool. Either tab-type Dynamic Parent in the viewport at the object level and follow the steps to set up the relationships or grab it from the Animation Tool Bar folder (same thing follow the steps).

See the help here:

http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini11.0/shelf/dynamicparent

It sets up the constraints and manages the interactive process of characters picking up objects, placing them or passing them to other parents using Blend Objects.

The Animation toolbar has some other tools that Character Animators would be interested in as well: Blend Pose, Parent Blend, Parent Constraint, Look At, etc.
