lukeiamyourfather
Try a VOP SOP. It allows for arbitrary point manipulation with a large library of nodes to work with. See the patterns section of the tab menu inside of a VOP SOP for some potentially useful nodes.
old school
Displace in uv space for wrinkles or other surface deformations. See the attached scene file for a simple set-up that adds general noise to a sphere. It shows you how to add a SOP attribute and paint in to it as a mask. The UV Brush SOP can be used to stretch the uv's around as well which I quickly threw in there. It is common to copy over the uv's in to a new custom set and then sculpt those and use those to drive the noise. displace_in_uv_space_wrinkles.hip
