Adam Ferestad
I am trying to think of how to start a this project. I am trying to figure out a way to crack up a road and add potholes in a procedural way so I can wedge out several versions using a seed value. If I could have start and end points for the longitudinal cracks it would be great. I need to keep potholes off of the edges of the tile as well. I am stretching what I have learned so far in Houdini and I am not able to figure out a place to start this type of effect. I have been able to make a decent road itself, but I can't figure out the how to distress it other than something like a displacement map. I would really like to stay away from this as it would be quite the trick to make it procedural.
thinkinmonkey
Hi, very interesting project! Don't worry, everyone of us little magicians has to destroy a street sooner or later! For example, the third part of my portfolio will be about that. Anyway, I don't know how much you know about Houdini, what I want to share with you is just a very rough idea to select the right prims to extrude down like potholes, the rest is up to you. For example, you could use polygonal sphere and randomize their vertices to have different shapes every time the COPY SOP creates them. Now I remember, you could look for a project about creating a crack with L-System, maybe it could inspire you. street.hipnc
Adam Ferestad
I had thought about using an L-system for the cracks. That would look great. Do you remember if that project was on this forum or another?
thinkinmonkey
Just made a little search with "system" :
smaugthewyrm
cmivfx has a lesson on procedural cracks in hip tricks vol. 1 <----LINK they also have a 3 volume set on road building, which includes procedural uv mapping. proc roads vol. 1 <----LINK with the application of proc. UVs, your pot holes become pretty simple. a seed controlling location for the pothole texturemaps could then give you a solution. cheers! Adam Ferestad
Yeah, I know all about those. I am saving up the money to get them. I am actually thinking of just paying the anual fee and doing their entire series for Houdini. But 400 is kinda steep right now.

Adam Ferestad
Unfortunately I don't know anyone and I only found the site a few months ago. :-( If anyone on here likes me enough and would like to help me qualify for the deal, that would be amazing because I have the money right now to pay that much.
