Displacement and NURBs surface

I'm generating a NURBs surface that I would then like to apply some displacement (using noise) to. I was experimenting with this last night and ran into problems with artifacts in the render (micro-poly) when I had the displacement turned on. Is there anything that you need to beware of when using NURBs surfaces like this? I tried some things like adding a UVTexture map and setting it to Rows and COlumns for the UV Map, and then converting this to polygons. The problem almost looked like it was due to overlapping UVs? Specifically in a few places I had black triangular holes in the rendered shape.
