"Digital Domain's partnership with Florida State University enables students to work for college credit on top films. Visual effects artists in Hollywood are not happy." look here: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-0403-digital-domain-20120403,0,510435.story more whine about this: http://vfxsoldier.wordpress.com/2012/03/26/the-paying-to-work-for-free-vfx-business-model/ Edited April 6, 2012 by dyei nightmare
Netvudu
I think that unless those students are supervised really closely, quality will suffer. Obviously, end quality might not be a factor in this DD´s decision Edited April 6, 2012 by Netvudu

mightcouldb1
I think that the best way to learn is on the job. You get up to speed the fastest when you have someone guiding you. I think that we should switch to this model for other fields as well as VFX. Would you rather pay $200,000 to get a bachelors degree(California) to only come out and become a banker (no offense to bankers), or pay less money to get trained in that field of your choice from the start? When you come out you have a job waiting for you if you've done well. I wish this was around when I went to school.

murc
yes you are right but the people complaining arent the students... but all other digital artists who are not in school... they feel like their jobs are on risk. They are complaining because what Digital Domain is proposing is exploitation. Having students pay $100,000 to work on the films that DD will then profit from is the same as saying: "Pay us $100,000+ and we will let you harvest our crops for us to sell and profit from" "Pay us $100,000+ and we will let you build cheap electronics in our factory for us to sell and profit from" "Pay us $100,000+ and we will let you sew gucci handbag knockoffs for us to sell and profit from" etc. I applaud DD's attempt to help students get valuable practical experience, but having the students pay for the privilege of doing so is disgraceful. There is enough exploitation in the industry as it is - think about how many enthusiastic young artists have burned out and quit the industry because they were treated like slave labor. If DD is serious about nurturing new talent, they should open up a VFX school like Gnomon or Vancouver Film School and do it that way, then let the students enter the company as junior artists. They need to take their current idea back to the drawing board.
Annon
I agree with murc, I think it's absolutely disgusting!!! It's fine doing work experience for students where they work for free in exchange for a bit of experience, but having the students pay to work is ridiculous..
