particle image dust falling effect

Hey guys,

So I have an image of a cross which is just black on white, and I want the image to transfer over to the particles,

which I have achieved, by using a grid with a texture on it as the emitter, but I want the particles to start falling from the bottom to the top and fall like it was ash or dust.

Can't figure out how to control which particles fall first. I have a gravity and curl noise hooked up to the image, but of course the entire image of particles fall at once, and it doesn't fall as if it were dust.

Any help would be great.

I have attached what I have thus far if anyone might can take a look.

Thank you

Hey Daivd,

I had a play with the file and there are a number of ways in doing this. Using a delete SOP, I chose to only keep pts within a certain range of the bouding box y value ($BBY). I animated a spare parameter to animate the range to keep. You may want to vary the range which pts are kept as right now, its a hard line.

I also modified the pop sim a little.

Hope this helps.
