Deep Exr anyone ?

Recommended Posts

I went through the manual on 13 but either not implemented yet or not documented on how to render deep images with Openexr2, for example in 3Delight for maya, instead of selecting exr as file format, there is deepexr file format and it works fine.. Anyone tried to solve this ? Please help.

I haven't tried yet, but my guess is the same as rat files. There is a separate parameter on Mantra ROP to render deep images. Just name your file with *.exr extension instead of *.rat and should be fine.

edit: I actually tried and yes, it's that simple.

Try Manta/Output/DCM Filename: $HIP/dcm.exr

thanks for the replies, I did figure out, we just type $HIP/dcm.exr in the DCM filename, but here is something else, same scene from 3delight with deep exr is 46 mb and same render from mantra is 156 MB, and, in 3delight for maya we get one file and I think the compression applies for the Deep data also, but I tried all the compression methods in Mantra and file size stayed same, where as image output size was keep changing, so compression currently does not apply to the deep exr in mantra i think , any thoughts on that ?

Yes syrmek, there are same number of planes inside. After some tests it seems like the compression choice does not apply for DCM output, thats the reason for the file size. Inside nuke I saved the 156mb Mantra Deep Exrs into compressed 16bit Deepexrs and the output was quiet similar and file size was 48.3mb.

The reason we are doing this now is our studios main renderer is 3delight and at fx department we use mantra to render, and we ran into some time constraints and we cannot export massive mesh into houdini currently so we decided to render the elements in deep exr so we wont need hold outs from Mantra.
