tires compressing as they collide with the ground

I'm trying to come up with a reasonably fast way to get a tire geometry object to "compress"/flatten out as it hits the ground. Using a Lattice and Bounds SOP seems to work OK for the bulging out bit, and I can see that you might be able to "fake" the compression a bit by translating the bottom-most points of the lattice upwards by the amount the tire is intersecting the ground, but is there a better way to do this? I've searched around and been surprised so far that I haven't found much on this. I presume I'm missing something obvious...

Well, it was totally implemented in VEX from top to bottom :)

Ick. I was hoping for some quick and dirty VOPs tricks :) Heck I don't even really need it, just thought it might look kind of cool if I could get it to work.
