odiwxe
hi,i've recently started learning houdini and i've decided to go into details with the shaders, materials, and SHOP context of houdini and VOPs,but how do i start from scratch to learn writing shaders and understanding all the stuff in houdini VOP and SHOP networks?do you suggest a book or a specific tutorial?can i learn myself or maybe a university degree is needed for this? jordibares
This is the very best option and as VEX is very much like RSL it should be pretty straight forward. hope it helps

Georgie
Excuse me for reviving the topic over basically nothing but I read Jordi's comment This is the very best option and as VEX is very much like RSL it should be pretty straight forward. hope it helps and since I'm also interested in getting familiar with shaders on a more fundamental level, I was wondering what is this? that he's referring to ? Is there a link missing / not showing up for me or am I missing something obvious ;o ? Edited December 2, 2014 by Georgie
sebkaine
Hi george check this https://www.udacity.com/course/viewer#!/c-cs291/l-124106597/m-176585793 http://renderman.pixar.com/view/brief-introduction-to-renderman#Shader_writing http://renderman.pixar.com/view/simple-shader-writing https://renderman.pixar.com/resources/RPS_17/rslFunctions.html http://www.scratchapixel.com/ http://www.fundza.com/ http://www.amazon.com/Physically-Based-Rendering-Theory-Implementation-ebook/dp/B007449TK2/ref=sr_1_4?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1417528080&sr=1-4&keywords=renderman http://www.amazon.com/Advanced-RenderMan-Creating-Pictures-Kaufmann/dp/1558606181/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1417528080&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=renderman Renderman RSL is legacy now but it is imo a very cool way to learn shading , VEX is a RSL clone so if you understand one you understand the other ...
