Guest tar
Calling all Windows users .Help me cross over to the dark side! In evaluating alternatives to OsX for increased Houdini performance, I'm currently finding H14 in Windows 7 SP1 to be quite crashy. Is this normal in Windows land, and, should I do anything special to make it more stable? i.e. crashes a few times per hour in normal use. All advice welcome! Guest mantragora
Log a bug Can't help because on my workstation it's rock solid.
Guest tar
Good to hear, sounds like I should be able to get a very stable system. ~50% of bugs have been logged - using the auto bug logger.
JonathanGranskg
Yep. In my experience Houdini on Windows is definitely unstable compared to Linux. I can simulate a lot more particles/voxels on Linux than I can on Windows. It's almost ridiculous. No idea how to make it more stable other than what mantragora said. Guest tar
the instability is just in the general interface, not many simulations yet. i.e. RMB in the Vop-Sop crash sometimes etc. I'll start analysing the crash reports more then.
michael
historically Houdini has been sensitive to graphics driver issues...you may want to ensure you're using the appropriate (this doesn't always mean latest) drivers for your card.
Guest tar
thanks Michael - the driver issues should show as GL lines in the crash report ya? I'll test out the different driver too. Edit: Looks to be solved by dropping to Nvidia driver 347.88 Edited April 28, 2015 by tar
Georgie
340.52 is the only version I've found to not give me any issues in any software. I'm running a GTX 480 though. I've also set my TEMP and TMP variables to a custom folder that I clean up every now and then - otherwise I get an absurd amount of crashes from Maya and Houdini despite having a lot of free space on my HDD. No idea why
malexander
I tried the WHQL Nvidia 350 driver for a while, but it kept bluescreening Windows when the monitor or GPU powered down on standby. So it didn't remain installed for very long. I suspect it had something to do with my dual-scalar 4K monitor that uses DP1.2 MST. While I did have it installed I didn't notice any graphic corruption at least, but admittedly my test window was pretty narrow.
Guest tar
Makes more sense now - the geforce drivers are totally geared/tweaked for games - never knew how much until reading up on GPUs! This gamedev post talks of the shenanigans: http://www.gamedev.net/topic/666419-what-are-your-opinions-on-dx12vulkanmantle/#entry5215019
fathom
for me, the biggest problem with houdini on windows is that houdini tends to use a lot of ram and windows doesn't seem to like that. i find doing anything memory intensive requires a lot of relaunching to keep from going over the physical ram limit.
