Arnold for houdini rim shader

Recommended Posts

thanks for your answer.did you use the houdini ramp or the arnold ramp?

I think houidini ramp does'nt work with arnold and the arnold ramp doesnt have this kind of effect.

i am new to houdini .can you upload your network shader, for this shader please?

Hi, recently I've been trying to reproduce rim shader as well. However I couldn't find Houdini's quivalent for Maya's sampler info.

I ended up using AO shader with reversed white and black colors. It gave me kind of similar effect.

Another way of doing this would by passing attributes but then you are limited by geometry resolution.

It looks like you should be able to use the shading state to get normal and incidence vectors

https://support.solidangle.com/display/AFHUG/Shading+State

Then math to get dot of normal and incidence vectors

https://support.solidangle.com/display/AFHUG/Math+Shaders

The result of the dot would get fed into the arnold ramp.

I don't have access to arnold in houdini at the moment to test though.
