Hey,

 

Just recently played with this kind of shot for the first time. You need to tweak the vel vectors quite a bit till it looks right. Also, do you have your object animated, moving in one direction i mean?

Thats really gonna help you get the 'dispersion' and 'cone' shape that u usually see....

A ship wake is due to a combination of things, but as there is a low pressure zone behind the ship, the velocity is not directed backwards but inwards, downwards, behind the ship. Then you have layers of waves on top of that.

 

Here's an illustration showing the main components in the wake.

I animate the ship in the x axis .Maybe i still need to tweek the vel.
