n4vdeep
Hi I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips of achieving a realistic building destruction in Houdini 15. I'd like the building to maintain some structural integrity and only have part of it collapse away. I have attached a very simple picture of a very basic building i modelled in Maya and would like to take to houdini to apply destruction sim to. Id like the section circled in red to maintain structure somewhat and the rest to collapse realistically, I wonder if there is anyone that can teach me with some tips on how this can be achieved, I've been trying to look into animating constraints but can not find much useful information. Any help would be great. Many Thanks Nav
Juraj
Hi, check masterclass about bullet rbd solver in Houdini. There is explained workflow with packed primitives and bullet. Check also example files from documentation. Basically you need to pre-fracture your building. You can create fractures only in areas which you want to break. The rest can be one big chunk. This can keep your chunks amount low. Then you can either glue all pieces together and break them with some collider (big sphere falling onto building), or set them initially to be static and then animate activation. This way you can control which pieces break apart first, which later.. When you are satisfied with your rbd simulation you can create separate particle simulation with debris. You can then instance small chunks onto particles. It will add nice detail which would be dificult to achieve with rbd simulation. You can use impact data from your primary sim to emit debris. After that you can create smoke simulation for dust. You can inject velocities from rbd sim to influence fluid motion. And that's it At first play with smaller steps like fracturing a cube and gluing / animating activation. When it works on small scale extend it to whole building.
