fullofat
Obviously I am new to Houdini asking things like this I have a very simple sphere geo scattered over grid with a copy node. Is it possible to export these scattered spheres as separate pieces to maya via Alembic? I understand you can do this with fractured geo. But I couldn't find any info on exporting separate pieces from a copy node. Any help will be very much appreciated! Thank you. mestela
Turn on 'pack geo' on the copy 'stamp inputs' tab, if you have the default option for 'enable alembic instances where possible', they'll come to maya as transforms. You can even control hierarchy and naming if you want: http://www.tokeru.com/cgwiki/index.php?title=HoudiniMisc Edited January 24, 2016 by mestela

It works flawlessly and the file size is incredibly small. I had about 200 spheres animated and alembic of that was around 100mb. And with your setting, the file size is only 5mb and they come in as instances in maya!!! Haha too good to be true Thank you so much once again!! EDIT>> oh in maya it says instances in the outliner but actually they are copies not instances. Is it possible to bring them in as instances in maya? mestela
It's a maya problem, not a houdini one (if you re-import that alembic back into houdini, you'll see they're still packed). One of our RnD guys recompiled our maya alembic plugin to do instances. We're locked to an older build of maya though, not sure if the latest maya has fixed it, or if its possible to get an alternative alembic plugin from elsewhere that'll do the right thing. Thank you so much Matt. I am using 2016 so it is not fixed. Well now that I know moving data between Houdini and maya works well, I'll just study houdini for now. And hopefully it will be fixed in Maya 2017. Matt, thank you so much for all your help!! very much appreciated
