I know it is an old post, but I wanted to reply to this one just for reference:

# the key here is to use the Python module that comes with
# Houdini itself
import nodegraphalign

# get the selected node
node = hou.selectedNodes()[0]

# Get the Network Editor, assuming it is under the cursor
# if it is not you can use
#
# network_editor = None
# for pane_tab in hou.ui.paneTabs():
#     if isinstance(pane_tab, hou.NetworkEditor):
#         network_editor = pane_tab
#         break
network_editor = hou.ui.paneTabUnderCursor()

nodegraphalign.alignConnected(network_editor, node, None, "down")
# up, left, right are the other options

# there are also other functions
#
# nodegraphalign.alignConnected
# nodegraphalign.alignItems
# nodegraphalign.alignSelected
