3d World Image Contest

Recommended Posts

In celebration of the release of Houdini 8.1, Side Effects Software and 3D World are giving you the chance to win a first prize of Houdini Master or a runner-up prize of Houdini Escape. Closing date for entries is 1 November 2006.

To create your image for this contest you must use the Houdini Apprentice Edition, which contains all of Houdini Master’s features and lets you develop demo-reel quality work with minor limitations: a small unobtrusive watermark, a non-commercial file format and a maximum render resolution of 720x576.

The entries will be judged on creativity, composition and your use of Houdini. While your image must be created and rendered in Houdini Apprentice, you are free to import models, characters and textures from other packages. You can then create additional models, shaders, lights, and effects using Houdini.

For complete contest details and deadline information, read the September issue of 3D World or go to the Computer Arts website.

Sven,

Thanks for pointing out the resolution change. The version of Apprentice that ships with 3D world can only render to 640x480. Therefore the context is using that resolution.

Recently we changed the maximum resolution to PAL but I only mentioned that as a description of Apprentice. The contest is still 640x480. Winning entries will be expected to supply their project files so that a higher resolution image can be rendered here at Side Effects.

Hey Robert,

A few Questions:

When does the contest start? Has it already started? I know it ends November 1st.

Can we use photoshop on the final image or not?

Can the models we use from other packages be already created or do we have to create them during the time of the contest.

Can we submit more than once? Chances are I will be lucky to get one done. lol ;):)

Dude I am totally in! I loved the contest last time. I already know what I am going to do for the contest.

Cheers,

Nate Nesler

- the contest has been officially announced on the 3D world website.

-If your image wins we will want to re-render it at a higher resolution. Therefore I would avoid using Photoshop. Now Houdini's compositing tools would of course be fine.....

- The models from outside do not have any specific restrictions. The key is what you do with them in Houdini.

- Check the rules at 3D world about submitting more than once. I am not sure.
