Three basic questions

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've put together a list of questions that have been buzzing in my head lately. I'm confident it would help me quite a lot understanding Houdini if you could answer these "simple" questions.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help

Generic

1. What is the difference between polygon, polygon mesh and mesh?

2. What is the "detail" class and when do you generally use it?

3. What is the difference between point and vertex?

Thanks

Peppino

Hard to believe, but all is there... in docs!:

1. What is the difference between polygon, polygon mesh and mesh?

http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini9.1/model/polys

2. What is the "detail" class and when do you generally use it?

http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini9.1/model/attributes

As I understand this topic, which is not the best guide here, details attributes disregard from geometry type and apply therefor to any of them - overwriting lower level attributes. So whatever prim's, point's or vertices's attributes will state, will be ignored if detail attribute exists.

This could be wrong though.

3. What is the difference between point and vertex?

cheers,

So, if I understand correctly, details is an attribute "global" to the piece of geometry and not tied to the type of geometry.

Primitive refers to what is commonly known in maya as face and points are vertexes but unlike vertexes they can exist anywhere and are not tied to edges?

Please let me know is I'm wrong :)

Thanks

P
