hey guys,

I am new to Houdini, exciting with its rigid body simulation.

and i am currently taking homework to crash a building like the pic,

Could anyone give me some suggestion about:

1. how crack the model in multiple pieces in Houdini?

2. then assign each pieces to rigid body to pull down??

just a briefy idea will be very appreciated!~

the example of "tower of Lodon" is amazing~

thx!~

There is a Fracture HDA on Exchange or use maybe foreach and cookies to fracture your model.

After Fracturing you geometry you can use the RBD Glue Object or RBD Fracute Object in your DOP network.

The Fracture Object falls apart almost immediately, while the Glue Object offers more control over the process.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jake,

I probably shouldn't be posting this on a houdini forum but the Tower was actually modelled and broken up in maya.

We used houdini to do the rigid body dynamics, particle simulations. lighting, and rendering.

Although we did the modelling in maya, there is no reason why it can't be done in houdini. In fact, on reflection, it probably would

have been easier to have fractured the tower in houdini. To break the model apart, I wrote a mel script that used booleans to create the cracks,

much like you would do using the cookie sop.

One major problem I encountered however, was that these booleans often caused some odd outcomes like strange pieces getting deleted.

This has a lot to do with the normals of the geometry. What I would suggest is that each time you perform a cookie,

check the normals of the object, because I know in maya, these tended to get messed up and caused a lot of errors.

Breaking up complex models, I found, is a very tedious process but just stick with it.

Once it is broken up, the dynamics in houdini is great.

The gnomon rigid bodies dvd i found quite useful when starting out and Im sure the new Digital Tutors one will be just as helpful. I'd suggest

having a look at these to get a basic understanding of how the dynamics in houdini works.

Good Luck,

Tim
