CeeGee
With your Group Sop selected, press Enter to enter the node's state, select point, face...and the press Enter to complete and you have a new selection.
dbukovec
Tried everything to have Transfer Selection To Pattern work, but no luck, maybe there is a magic workaround, but it only works like CeeGee said, altough this feature would be very usefull. Also, description of this button is missing from the help too.
old school
To do this in H9, simply press the ` (backquote key) or RMB on the select arrow and choose the option "Reselect For Current Tool". Now you can modify the selection and Enter to complete. This works for all SOPs. This is an old hold-over before Houdini had proper viewport selections. This should really be removed. sibarrick
I'm sure there was a time were you could type in the name of an existing group in the pattern field and then press the transfer selection to pattern and it would expand the named group into a pattern of numbers. This was useful.
