Ink shader

Can anyone give me any suggestions on the best way to start creating an ink shade?. I've only used vex once to create an xray shader, so I tried starting out the same way, but that didn't work. Any suggestions work be extremely helpful. Here's a link for the look I'm trying to achieve.

One way could be to render points and use the simplest of shaders, just a color with a low brightness value and a low opacity. The values will be dependent on the number of points. The trick is to render LOTS of points. Mark Story's clusterthis procedural can help with that!
