frading
Has anyone tried mental ray or BMRT with houdini? is it easy to make them communicate? I'd be happy to have some clues about it... or could someone tell me about the efficiency of the mantra renderer? Actually I am looking for rendering some fog or transluence effects. I have seen in the tutorials that causics and global illumination are possible, so, this is quite good, but is the renderer as good as mental ray or renderman/bmrt? MG
I haven't really tried mental ray yet. But shading wise, I think you're currently better off with XSI if you want to use mental ray badly.
frading
mmm, actually I am trying to use houdini really badly as I am begining to be in love with it. So I am testing the forces of its own renderer and trying to get other work with it. but thx for the advice anyway!
MG
You can always use the standard mental ray shaders. You can add them in SHOPs and apply them at OBJ or SOP, with Shader SOP, level. I must also note, some mental ray distributions don't seem to work with Houdini. I think you're best off with standalone mental ray. (The ones delivered with Softimage are tricky I think. I might be wrong).
