"eyebrow raising" things on H12.5 for existing users

Recommended Posts

I thought I would open a thread so the regulars around here can comment on things that raised an eyebrow while playing with the new 12.5 update.

I will start with a simple but interesting one. Regarding the cloud light the help docs states in a yellow box:

Note

This node currently only works with standard Houdini volumes. It does not work with VDBs

But it doesn´t seem to be true, as the cloud rig itself creates a volume with VDB and lits it with the Cloud Light quite effectively...I blame to outdated docs here or maybe last minute changes.

PS: By the way, "Volume Step Size" is now called "Volume Quality", which makes sense, but makes me think SESI feels we´re becoming dumber :P

oooh, I know it´s mentioned among the new features but it´s really nice to be able to add interior detail and clusters to the Voronoi Fracture and don´t get any first frame jumping with bullet

yes, that's a great little detail :)

it's a stunning dot release

Was having a play with the FLIP tools and noticed that the setup for creating the fluid mesh is no longer using the particle surface node but converting the points to a volume using the vdb nodes and transferring the velocity using a snippet. Kinda cool, and pretty fast :)

Also "create intermediate directory" on ROP and files nodes may not be glam but sure is useful.

I don't know if it's me, but mantra seems to crash (unable to start mantra error) and I can't initiate a render, so I have to restart houdini. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.

Sometimes the particles from one filter node which isn't enabled, still shows in the viewport. Whitewatersolver was crashing when particle seperation was set @ .02 for main fluid sim :) That stopped when I set main fluid sim to .03...
