(novice) File vs File cache

Am I correct in assuming the File Cache is essentially identical to the File SOP but with more options?

Is there any reason you couldn't always use the File SOP for caching?

Also, why doesn't the File SOP by default recognize .sim files? Is it simply that .bgeo is always preferred, even for caching sims?

Indeed, the fileCache sop is a expanded version of the file sop. You can dive into the fileCache sop where you can see that it uses the file sop as well. The big advantage of the fileCache sop is that it makes it easier to export sequences of geometry from the UI or in batch.
