I started of with a beating blob, animated via a CHOP network, and then experimented with instance rendering. The renders where then composited in Houdini. (which unfortunately crashed a lot) Instancing is brilliant because it is so fast but I wish there was a convenient way to preview it. A "make instance" button on a copy SOP would be ideal. There was also a problem with the shelf tool fur not instancing properly so I had to build the cilia with a particle system.
