Hey Francesco.

Well there are a bunch of videos on SESI's site. Other training places include CMIvfx, 3dbuzz, digital tutors. There are quite a few training videos on vimeo and some other sites who's names I can't remember right now (silly cold ;)). I suggest you download the apprentice application which is basically a fully loaded Houdini (but for non-commercial projects) and then try and work your way through some of the tutorials.

Sorry I can't point you to specific tutorials to help you, but this should be enough to get you started. Perhaps someone else has a clearer idea.

Cheers

Marc

Thanks very mush for your fast reply.

I downloaded apprentice and I try something but I don't have so many confidence on this software (I become from Silo for modelling). I don't find so user friendly houdini especially modelling tool (because I come from another app? I think so, but SI look more friendly, only my suggestion).

I see many tutorial but would like to find some tutorial who can show me from start to finish a tipical houdini workflow for character (modelling, uv rendering and so on). Exist one or someone similar?

Thanks again

Hi

thanks for your support. Actually I'm a limited internet connection, I will wait a more fast and flat internet connection, then I will study from 3dbuzz online tutorial.

At first approach, I must say houdini modelling look too slow for my taste (I use silo for modelling), do you know someone who use Houdini for modelling character? Looks like many (or major part) use houdini only for special effect and not for modelling or character animation (IMHO).

You're right, houdini is used a lot more for FX than modeling, but that doesn't mean it won't be a good modeler.

Try not to bother with the nodes in the beginning. Maximize the 3d viewport and try to model using the poly commands in the TAB menu and the keyboard shortcuts for the transformations commands (move, rotate, scale). It takes a little practice but you will get the hang on it.

The nodes would be a good use for character modeling if for example:

  • .At some point of your modeling process, you figure that you wanted to try a different approach at something you did few steps back but you're not sure it will work, etc...
.You can just make a bifurcation on your nodes
.Make the new features in the model
.Then compare the two to see what works better
.You can delete the branch that you didn't like
.Or just leave it there in case you change your mind latter

... and that is just the beginning :-)
