ikarus
doing it in Mantra alone seems pretty pointless and overcomplicated, i suppose you could extract a volume from the brightest area and expand it a little and use some constant, emitting volume shader. or do it in cops and make it 100% easier Edited September 20, 2010 by ikarus
ykcosmo
simple idea is using sprites. more complex idea is using metaball as volume. If I were you, I would like to use Houdini 11's fluid system to make it. (fluid in H11 is very fast) Edited September 20, 2010 by ykcosmo
calix
Hi! There is a Lensflare Shader from the Austrian Company Camf Production ==> www.camf.com It's for Houdini 8 I think, but it should still work! Look under Media/VEX Shaders! I tried it with H10 some time ago! calix sorry seems you're looking for a different effect... Edited September 20, 2010 by calix

pclaes
you should emit from lines rather than from points, you get too much staggered points. Each particle creates a line (trail sop) and then you use that line (resampled) to emit new particles from.
