cgcris
Hi guys, What do you guys about this for a sim/rendering solution with houdini? Just tinkering with the idea, but would it be great to throw a big SIM to this setup: http://www.3drenderfarm.com/ No graphics card, but in a way that would help keeping the price down.. Erik_JE
I think you are better off just buying one expensive machine with a ton of ram if you are gonna do heavy simulations. For rendering it would probably work pretty good.
Mandrake0
it's a nice compact design for the price. thanks for the link.
danw
Yep, a few fast cores will usually outstrip a room full of networked cores for things like fluid sim... there's just too much data to move between cores - even the interconnect bus between CPUs in a dual-chip machine can be easily saturated and end up slowing down proceedings. It would certainly be a fine thing for rendering though :-)
