Femto Photography

Light in CG doesn't really behave the same as in the real world, you won't "catch" the rays by slowing things down.. So this might not be as complicated as it may seem. Maybe animate a point light to go through a volume or SSS object could be a good starting point.

yup - in CG you aren't simulating the trillion-trillion, 1024, photons per second in a square inch(?) that happen in the real world. You use integrals to average it.

 

In Vfx you are simulating the world through mathematics.

Oh mercy, imagine trying to explain a trillion frame render to your CG supervisor!

 

Skybar has the right idea - you don't need to overthink this one. Render at a sensible frame rate and animate a light source... volumes, particles, metaballs, play around with some different kinds of geometry as light sources.
