rolfcoppter
Hey guys I'm going to be building a dual xeon rig and was wondering if there were any options for dual cooling in the rig? I was looking at heat sinks and I'm not sure if they will both fit on the motherboard at the same time? I could use dual cosair H80i but I don't really want to use liquid cooling as i feel it may be overkill. Sierra62
I run dual Xeons myself and I will agree that liquid cooling is overkill, but the space saving is great. I used to run big heat sinks and it was a pain to try and work around, but I switched to two Corsair H60's.
zoki
I have big overheating problems with both quadro 4000 and xeons in hp z800 box decided to install noctua fans in coming months
mupapabear
Hey, I run dual xeon e5 2630 with these coolers http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ADTOKPO On this board https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z9PED8_WS/overview/ I have tested my rig for a few days now at almost constant 100% cpu capacity, and so far everything runs smoothly. Space is an issue though, The heatsinks are pretty large, so getting to your ram slots is a bit fiddly. If I look at your MB layout it might get tricky to fit sth this large on there. Heatsink Dimensions : L155 mm x W53 mm x H170 mmYou need to add a bit for the fans edit : just realized how old this topic was, sorry for that Edited June 12, 2015 by mupapabear
itriix
For those of you that are running the dual xeons, have you done any benchmarks on large sims, with your dual xeon setup vs single cpu? I'm torn between building the dual E5-2630v3 2.4GHz 8-core vs single E5-1660v3 3.0GHz 8-Core or even an i7 5960x (3.5GHz 8-core). I'll be concentrating mainly on large sims. (the idea that i can upgrade more than 64gb ram later on) steers me towards the E5's for both dual or single cpu setups (over the 5960x). I would just love to know if anyone notices any big boosts in performance with one setup or another on these types of sims.
Guest tar
One CPU has the advantage of not moving data over the QPI, when doing larger sims this should be considered. I think you are good to go with any of these - just get it, make money with it so you can get the next machine, then this one becomes a batch node
