Old POP Network vs New Pop Network

I want to know if there are resources on understanding the differences between the new POP Network in its current state(Houdini 15) vs what is listed as POP Network - Old

As a new Houdini user I have been attempting to follow several tutorials (mainly Houdini Particle Morphing Effects -CmiVfx). Alot of the particle tutorials I've come across were made before this newer version of the POP Network came out and are using what i suppose is now the old POP Network.  Is the new POP network vastly superior to the point I should try to translate what I'm seeing in tutorials, or is it ok to use the POP Network -old nodes? Is there even a direct correlation between the two? Id hate to create a bunch of R+D work in the old network only to have the system itself phased out next version.

Any one care to shine some light on this for me?

The new POP network is quite superior, especially for the fact that it runs in DOPS and you have all the particle operations available to all other solvers and vice-versa, plus a bunch of other bonuses.

That said, sometimes it can be easier to use the old one but as a rule of thumb in production we only really use the new one.

The difference is not much, you learn one, you can easily figure out the other, one runs in SOP one in DOP but most of the operations are the same.

Some nodes name have been changed but you can just open the menu and read the names and kinda get an idea of what's available to you.

Here are links to a couple of useful tutorials, one from Rohan Dalvi, one from Peter Quint.

Hope that helps!

Diego, Thanks for the feedback, I’ve been piecing together an education from these videos.

For anyone else worrying about not being able to rebuild old- POP networks, I recommend watching -Lesson 7 Particles in the Tutorial Archive on the SideFx website.  They cover some of the differences between the old/new and really made things click for me.  In my infinite noobishness I was searching for a direct name correlation between the nodes. In most instances they have simply appended “POP” to the front of the nodes names.

For example:

Force from the Old Pop Network is now POP Force

Velocity == POP Velocity

I ended up following my cmivfx tutorial pretty closely and am now rebuilding my particle system in the new Pop system. So far so good.'
