Hi everyone ,

I would like to participate in cgtalk challenge but my knowledge of particles, shading and lighting is not strong enough so I am wondering if anyone is interested in teaming up together .

Whay I can do is set and props modeling , texturing ,abit of lighting and may be comping it together .

We have only a month and two weeks so please let me know .If nobody is intrested , I will have to join other team .

Mmmm, it's tempting, this challenge looks really cool. I wouldn't attempt it by myself, but maybe if other od[folks] were to join in... :D

Can someone with broadband check out this site? http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catalog/moon.php

Maybe download one of the high-res moon surface maps and see how useful they'd be? They even have a normal map, but the problem is that it's not very high-res. I'm sure those 8k maps would be sufficient for many shots, but without matching bump/displacement it's kinda moot. I thought about an all procedural shader for the moon but after looking at some detailed images of the thing it seems like it would be very challenging (I'm not saying impossible).

What are those VT Moon Surface Maps and that one DDS file btw?

Some more fodder.

This challenge sounds real interesting but poorly presented. It is presented as a lighting challenge then go in depth how the motion should be based on real physics with little emphasis on lighting. Go figure...

Anyhow, the physics part is ripe for CHOPs. The set construction combined with shaders and lighting is the challenge.

Much of the VFX work on Apollo 13 was done by Digital Domain way back. This reperesents your target. I also know that many that worked on that film frequent this forum...

One of the many things that impressed me on Apollo 13 was that D2 created a physically correct star field from scientific data for the feature as a script file that would load in to Prisms at render time. Hmmm PRISMS. That dates the film.

There was also the imax 3D film in space done by DKP right here in Toronto. If it were possible, this was a notch up in realism from Apollo13 and all the VFX work but this time done in Houdini and using Mantra I believe. Again some of the users frequent this forum.

Lots of precedence to say it can be done with Houdini...

I am getting excited thinking about how many "lens flares" I will get to see in the coming month. :P

I see, so dds is an image format.

Old school, agreed. I don't understand the focus on lighting for this challenge. I may be wrong but I thought space lighting is pretty easy, no? There is virtually no light bouncing due to lack of atmosphere, I would think that lighting any interior would be much more difficult to do right. Maybe the challenge here is to make it look interesting?

And I would rather attempt the Fantasy part of the challenge, because a) it would be much easier, and B) more creative freedom (space-craft designs, launch methods, etc). That's just me though.

I guess everyone is busy .I think I will go for it anyway .Even if I don't really familir with other aspects , I can take this project as my learning process.

I will start my storyboard/previs this week and hopefully can start my modeling soon. B)
