for what do they use L systems in Houdini?

All sorts, plants and trees, lightening forks, pretty patterns. I've used them for vascular systems and I'm currently using one to model parts of the cerebellum of the brain.

basically anything you can think of that is self iterating.. think a little harder and you might even see things past that.. i've used them for a test of a growing ambilical chord once..

I believe there is a good book by Dr. P and Dr. Lindenmayer (the L himself) called The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants.

a good example of how l-systems are used would be for the intro to fight club, when the camera tracks backwards through the brain.

that network used lsystems

then in what "dreams may come", the large tree was also a exposition of what lsystems could do.
