Caustics from HDRI Redshift Domelight render as colored dots

Recommended Posts

Hello there,

I'm relatively new to Redshift an encountered a problem that by searching and looking into the documentation I couldn't solve. I set up a simple scene with an Ocean (Standard material with slightly modified Water Preset) and a rough sand-like surface beyond the Ocean. Whith caustics enabled in the Domelight settings i get smarties, where - beyond the water surface - caustics should render. Why?

Modified Redshift ROP Settings:
Unified Sampling: 128 - 1024
Global Illumination: Primary>Brute Force, Secondary>Irrandiance Point Cloud
Photon Mapping: Caustics & GI enabled

A hint here would be much appreciated! Thanks

Got a precise answer on the RS forum by Darby Edelen. Sharing it here also, in case someone ran into a similar problem.

Photon caustics from a dome light will be very very difficult to resolve. Ray traced caustics work much better for a dome light, but that feature is not yet available in Redshift.

In the meantime you’d probably be better off using an infinite light to cast photons (you can disable it’s ray contributions). You’ll still need to shoot a lot of photons, especially with dispersion on the refracting material, but it should clean up better than the dome light.
