Toon Outline

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I just did a test with Maya's toon outline. I found that was fantastic and fast. I did not even need to turn on ray trace to have the cartoon outline rendered! Does anyone know what algorithm has been applied on that toon outline shader? Can it be re-produced easily in Houdini with Rman? Or just use the Trace sop. (the toonoutline method on the advanced renderman book was far more too complicated)

thank you for your attentions!

Have you tried the wren output driver? It's a vector render and does a decent job of creating contours. And it's fast.

Also search this forum for NPR (Non-photoreal rendering) as well as toon shaders. Approaches to toon shaders has come up in the past.

Maya' Toon line is done with Paint Fx, its really powerful.

you can create or use just about any paint fx brush with it.

As t o the algorithm I've no idea, just it uses the paint fx render engine, which is a post render process.

The wren output driver is an excellent idea and works well, this coupled with

the other NPR techniques found here and there on the site should get you pretty far.
