8bit PNG insteaf of 16bit Floating Point?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, why do I always get 8bit PNGs though I epecifically tell Houdini to render them in 16bit and even 32bit (Single Channel) in settings?

The only setting that outputs actual 16 bit PNG for me is 16bit Fixed, but I think fixed is limiting colors so I would like to get real 16bit floating point PNGs. Is it possible?

PNG does not understand floating point values. It hast to be fixed. The fact that you can select 16bit float does not mean you can use it for all image formats. That's a bit confusing in this UI. As much as I know the only image format which can save 16bit float (half float) ist OpenExr.
