I'd go for a "reverse" animation .. like you traceSOP the puzzle pattern.. you sop build your pieces.. then (well.. prior the actual pieces modeling) you animate the traced primitives with CHOP or anything else from the "final" state which is instead the first frame of the timeline... confused enought? .. sorry I'm just back from lunch :S

I dont have it here but I can post you a HIP file I did (well.. my houdini first mentor did like 7 years ago) long time ago .. pretty straightforward for this.
