Shaders can 'read' the color from points, primitives - I guess even detail - attributes. The colorSOP is a HDA that combines different approaches. If you know what you are after you can use a sop to change the attribute of choice directly. Or even roll you own in VOPs. I often use the pointSOP. Hope this helps.
