sibarrick
Does anyone here have any experience retargeting mocap data? My crude method at the moment involves basically ditching most of the data and using IK solvers to retrack the feet and hands, having roughly scaled the data to match leg lengths. Are there more sophisticated techniques that can be employed, looking for Houdini solutions or solutions that can be implimented in Houdini ta

How did your "crude" method work out?
sibarrick
It works ok, but does require a fair amount of tweaking.
Jason
It works ok, but does require a fair amount of tweaking. Anyone ever use the Handle Object?
sibarrick
Years ago. I don't think you can use it to re-target you just use them to set up the initial mocap data, I think. They let you link the tracked nulls to the bone system, from what I remember.... Edited May 11, 2008 by sibarrick

sibarrick
Well they have added fbx support, which although not directly for mocap, certainly makes it easier to get it into Houdini. Other than that it probably fits in with the whole lack of love for chops. Maybe once dops is more finished they'll get back to chops and cops. lisux
Teorically you can make any kind of retargeting using CHOPs, in fact chops have tools to deal with quaternions to solve rotations problems, the problem here is that you have to make all the math work to pass from one skeleton to another and implement it in CHOPs. The tools provided by motion builder or MOTOR from XSI can be build on top of CHOPs, basically you need something that compares to skeleton templates and guess the differences between them, hopefully SESI can do this in a near future will be really useful. sibarrick
I don't suppose you know of any links that explain the theory of this? I have no problem with quaternion math I'm just not sure what processes are involved, I can't get a handle on where to start with this... lisux
Anyone ever use the Handle Object? Not so much but it seems to be designed to work with motion capture rather than retargeting, maybe you can approximate to the end points of the source skeleton, the final position of every bone, but waht happens in between? who knows.....
