KrisStaber
can i for example create a spine curve then have ONE polygon cylinder be deformed by that curve (squash and stretch and all) then have that cylinder deform the upper body of the character via enveloping or alternatively (would be even better) can i envelope geometry with a curve ? so in maya language: skin geometry to a curve thanks for your help
digitallysane
WireCapture and WireDeform SOP do that. You can also copy metaballs on any geometry then capture and deform using the metaball capture (basically creating custom muscles). Dragos this means i can theoretically just create a spine with a curve and no need for bones or geometry ?
michael
a curve is geometry but yes you can.
KrisStaber
ah interesting so you can just envelope various different points to one curve is that curve then one object i can envelope to or do i have to envelope to the control points of the curve ? edward
WireCapture/WireDeform envelopes to the closest "u" position on the curve.
thekenny
Hey Ed, Do you think there would be much interest in doing an offset curve deformation technique as shown in the siggraph presentation from Sony 2008? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on it. -k
edward
Er, you have a link? I didn't go to siggraph this year ...
thekenny
Er, you have a link? I didn't go to siggraph this year ... heh...link no but you can get the presentation in the siggraph encore material...look for Offset Curve Deformation from Skeletal Animation from Sony. edward
Hmm, well, not interested enough in purchasing the material. Does anyone know if it's available off of the full conference material? If so, I can probably find it from work. The abstract seems kinda interesting and potentially doable without the HDK?

I would very interested in learning how to do this without the HDK... my VOP skillz are not that strong. -k
