Seldon
I am wanting to get a new Mac Pro and would like to know if anyone here has any experience with it. I know that Sidefx recommends a "workstation class" graphics card, but Apple has dropped the Nvidia Quadro option. The only options available now are the Geforce GT 120 and the Radeon HD 4870 from ATI. Which one would I be better off with??? Thanks, A. stevenong
I have the previous version with a Nvidia 8800GT and it runs Houdini well. Cheers! steven
Matt_K
I also have a Mac with the 8800GT and it runs very nicely. Matt.
digitallysane
The better option is the NVidia card. If what you're interested in is actually a Nehalem Xeon workstation (that is, not specifically a Mac), then be aware that other manufacturers have already announced such systems (Boxx, Dell), which will be available with Quadros. malexander
The Nvidia GT120 is actually a GEForce 9500 rebranded. It has 32 shaders running at 500MHz, which is pretty weak for 3D apps. In contrast, the previously offered 8800GT has 128 shaders running at 600MHz. It puzzles me that Apple would drop the option for a more powerful graphics card from Nvidia, especially in the "Pro" line. Perhaps they expect people to upgrade to the ATI 4870 for heavy 3D work.
