Hey there you could start by going through http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com...&Itemid=132 http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com...&Itemid=132 I know that CMI vfx have a course on rendering I think that if you're new to rendering, then getting into shader writing and want to understand the theory behind "normals" etc - look introduction to render renderman guides and pdf's online or buy a book on that because what you'll learn there will be applicable to mantra. - just to broaden your theory. When you start getting into pbr and mantra specific shaders, ie volumetric rendering etc I would start by reverse engerneering shaders SESI supply with houdini, go into the vop networks on basic materials. all of this will be confusing if you havent got a small grasp of what the basics, so i wouldnt start there but it does give u a little room to play around in. kumpa
whoops but in the meantime check out http://www.digitaltutors.com/store/home.php?cat=116 Hehe, hope it will be better than one from digital tutors. I heard that some guys from digital tutors made a lot of horrible mistakes during maya lessons.

michael
not sure why you'd need to use expressions... the best thing to do is start with the very basics... the links that aracid posted are a good start... also: http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com...&Itemid=132 and during each tutorial, have a look through the help cards for each node (the little ?) and read up on what the different parameters do... then make a simple scene or grab something from here: http://www.3drender.com/challenges/index.htm and just play around... the goal isn't to create a perfect render but to learn /how/ to render... also, don't bother trying to write shaders until you get comfortable with lighting and rendering, there are plenty of good shaders that come with Houdini... as you get deeper into it, start a thread in the WIP section and post any questions you have...
